“A Christian?”

23 Mar

Which of these is necessary for a person to be rightly called “a Christian?”

1. Right beliefs?  (This was the emphasis I heard as a young person and is the basis for traditional evangelism)

2. Right community?  (This is about having people who model the way and provide accountability)

3. Right heart?  (This emphasizes motives and character)

4. Right actions?  (This is supported by biblical passages such as sheep and goats story)

Are all of these necessary? One? Two?

I think 1. Belief leads to 2. The community you surround your self with which leads to 3. A change in the condition of your heart and out of your heart condition 4. Your actions are a outward expression of your heart. So I think all are present when we truly are a sheep and not a goat!!!

I think Jesus always looked to the heart. So I would vote for number 3 if I had to pick only one. However He also rewarded faith and spoke of faith often, and so I think beliefs ( ie that Jesus is the Son of God, the Holy Spirit, etc) are essential too.

      1. Right beliefs? We must be exposed to Christ to believe, may take many encounters or introductions though it seems God introduces himself when humans fail to approach the issue 2. Right community? We must desire such a community and seek after; it this also can take time and maturity in faith; the Israelites needed 40 years 3. Right heart? This is a tough one for me as I know when our hearts are not right and we resist giving our heart completely to God our hearts must be broken or they harden. Either way there is trouble and this is uncomfortable for all involved We all go through times of open hearts and reservation; God is so patient 4. Right actions? Our actions become more deeply involved with Christ through our faith walk, as a child we may do, do, do and then this may lessen until we become like a child again by accepting guidance from our Father. SOOOOO all are part of a Christian’s life to some degree all the time if you are required to have them all at the same time is still open ended for me and only God can truely determine if it is required. Thanks for that time of reflection:)

If you have a right heart then the others follow.
